This hand-carved Papa Legba statue depicts the most powerful lwa in Haitian Vodou — the guardian of the crossroads, keeper of the gate between the living and the spirit world. Standing at his post with a skull-topped staff, his faithful dog at his feet and offerings hanging from the wood, this is a deeply detailed piece carved from solid ash wood and available in two finishes: natural brown and a darker painted Colored variant. Each piece is individually carved in Ukraine, standing 8 inches tall.

Papa Legba is the first lwa invoked in any Vodou ceremony — without his permission, no other spirit can be reached. He is the solar god of crossroads, roads, and communication in the broadest sense: the keeper of all knowledge, the one who stands at every threshold between worlds. He is ancient beyond measure, and he tests those who seek his favour — sending trials to see whether a person is truly ready to cross. In Louisiana Voodoo he appears as an old man with a cane and a dog; in Haitian Vodou he is sometimes depicted as a skeletal figure of immense power. He is associated with Saint Peter in syncretic traditions, the keeper of keys and gates. Browse more Vodou and Voodoo spirit carvings in our Voodoo & Vodou statue collection.
