Squirrel iconography is open to interpretation, but energy, quickness, intelligence, and alertness are commonly associated with this animal. Squirrels are known for being constantly on the move and vigilant. In some cultures, the squirrel is connected to the idea of light due to its ability to dart through trees like a sunray. In other cultures, the squirrel is associated with fertility, abundance, and innovation. In Christianity, however, squirrels are seen as destructive, hungry animals associated with the devil.

The Norse squirrel Ratatoskr is believed to have incited hostility between two other creatures on the world tree Yggdrasil. In Japan, squirrels are symbols of fertility, abundance, and innovation, while in South America, they were offered as sacrifices to Mayan gods. In Celtic folklore, squirrels were linked to the sorceress and warrior queen Medb. In North America, squirrels are regarded as good spirits that bring good fortune, harmony, and balance in life.

Squirrels are also seen as a symbol of survival and the value of having positive relationships with family and friends. They represent play, fun, and the enjoyment of life. The harmony between ideas, deeds, instinct, and luck necessary for survival is another interpretation associated with squirrels.
