Many other terrier breeds are believed to be descended from the smooth fox terrier, it is the first breed in the fox terrier group to be officially recognized by the English Kennel Club in 1875.
Historically, fox terriers were used to hunt foxes, running into their dens and chasing them towards other dogs and hunters. White smooth-coated fox terriers were highly valued because they were less likely to be mistaken for a fox.
These dogs are alert, lively and intelligent. They are also different to mischief, charming, but cunning. A fox terrier can outwit you, but it will definitely make you laugh at its antics. Their watchful nature makes them great watchdogs, but it also means they tend to bark.
Fox Terriers are children at heart and love to play with children, but they are too active for a child under 6 or 7. They play rough, and children's high-pitched voices and running amok can make them look like prey.
