He stands at every crossroads between life and death, dressed in a suit and top hat, skull-faced and irreverent, holding a carved coffin as a mark of his dominion. He is not a god of fear but of truth: that death is inevitable, that it can be laughed at, and that the boundary between worlds is thinner than we think. Baron Samedi in Haitian Vodou

• First of the Dead: Baron Samedi is the head of the Guede family of Loa — the spirits of the dead — and the first man ever to be buried, giving him authority over all who follow
• Appearance: Depicted as a skeleton or man in a black suit, top hat, and dark glasses, often with a skull face and feather boa — a figure of dark theatricality
• Guardian of the Crossroads: He presides over the boundary between life and death, and no soul can pass to the ancestral world without his permission
• Healer and Trickster: Despite his macabre image, Baron Samedi is also a healer — invoked to cure the sick — and a trickster whose crude humour reminds the living not to take themselves too seriously
• Symbolism: The coffin, skull, and crossbones he carries represent mortality; his irreverence reflects the Vodou understanding that death is not an end but a transition
