From 945 until 960, Kievan Rus was ruled by Princess Olga, the wife of Prince Igor Rurikovich and the mother of Svyatoslav Igorevich.

The first woman to lead Kievan Rus, Princess Olga is remembered throughout history as a clever and independent leader. Under Olga, Rus' was given the nickname Gardarika, or "the country of cities," by European traders.

Princess Olga was born in the Pskov village of Vybuty, according to the earliest chronicle "The Tale of Bygone Years," which details her life. Since the parents were peasants and not of aristocratic lineage, their names are unknown.
