Morpheus in Greek Mythology
God of dreams: Morpheus was the son of Hypnos (Sleep) and one of the Oneiroi — the spirits of dreams who dwelt in the underworld and rose each night to visit the sleeping world.
Divine messenger: Unlike his brothers who sent shapeless visions, Morpheus alone could take human form in dreams — making him the messenger of the gods to sleeping mortals.
The child in his arms: The sleeping child symbolises innocence, new beginnings, and the vulnerability of the dreaming mind — held safe in the god’s embrace.
Wings of night: Morpheus was depicted with dark wings, allowing him to fly silently between the waking world and the realm of dreams without disturbing the sleeper.
Legacy: His name gives us the word “morphine” — the sleep-inducing substance — and “morphing,” reflecting his power to shift and transform within the dream world.
