Tyr — The One-Handed God of Justice
Tyr is one of the oldest gods in the Norse pantheon — the god of justice, law, oaths, and the courage to uphold what is right when it costs you something. His defining story is the binding of Fenrir: the gods needed to restrain the great wolf before Ragnarök, but Fenrir would only submit if one of the Aesir placed a hand in his mouth as a pledge. Tyr volunteered. When the binding held and Fenrir realised the deception, he bit off Tyr's hand. Tyr lost the hand. The world was protected.
Among the Norse gods, Tyr is the one who understood that justice is not abstract — it has a price, and someone has to pay it. The Tiwaz rune (ᚪ), named for him, is carved on sword blades and invoked before legal proceedings, oaths, and acts of courage. He belongs on the altar of anyone who has ever had to choose between what is easy and what is right.
