At Odin’s side in Valhalla sat two wolves — Geri and Freki, whose names mean “the Ravenous” and “the Greedy.” Each day, Odin fed them the meat from his table, for he himself needed no food — wine alone sustained the Allfather. They were his constant companions, his hunting partners, and the embodiment of the wild, untameable force that runs beneath the order of the gods. Where Odin’s ravens Huginn and Muninn brought him knowledge of the world, Geri and Freki brought him the primal energy of the hunt. This Geri and Freki Viking Shield Wall Plaque honours Odin’s legendary wolves in hand-carved ash wood, shaped with care in our family workshop.

Plaque Characteristics

  • Material — Ecological Ash Wood: Sustainably sourced ash provides a tight, even grain that holds fine figurative carving beautifully.
  • Finish — Hand-Applied Varnish: A protective varnish finish seals the wood and enhances its natural warmth.
  • Dimensions — 11.0" H × 12.2" W × 1.5" D (28 × 31 × 3.8 cm): A shield-form panel — bold and commanding on any wall.
  • One-of-a-Kind Design: Each piece is unique due to natural wood grain and tone — no two are exactly alike.

Symbolism of Geri and Freki

  • Odin’s Companions — Geri (“the Ravenous”) and Freki (“the Greedy”) were Odin’s constant companions in Valhalla, fed by the Allfather himself each day
  • The Wolf in Norse Tradition — wolves were sacred to Odin and the warrior class; they were the animals of the battlefield, the hunt, and the wild places beyond human settlement
  • Loyalty & Ferocity — the wolf embodied the dual nature of the Norse warrior: absolute loyalty to the pack and ferocious power against all enemies
  • Fenrir’s Shadow — the wolf loomed large in Norse eschatology; Fenrir, the great wolf, was destined to swallow Odin at Ragnarök — making the wolf both companion and cosmic threat
  • The Hunt — Geri and Freki represent the primal, instinctual energy that even the god of wisdom kept close — a reminder that power without wildness is incomplete

Drawing from the mythic depths of our Norse collection and the warrior tradition found throughout our Viking collection, this wolf shield plaque is more than just decor. It is a testament to the artisan craft found in our wooden wall plaques, bridging the ancient bond between Odin and his wolves with a presence that commands every room it enters.
