In Scandinavian mythology, Geri and Freki are two wolves who accompany the god Odin. In Old Icelandic, Geri means “greedy” and Freki means “voracious”. They accompany Odin on his travels and protect him in battles. During wanderings, wolves move in front of the supreme god - scouting the path. And when Odin sits on his throne in Valhalla, the wolves meekly lie at his feet. While one of the wolves sleeps, the other does not sleep and keeps watching.

That is why it is impossible to surprise their master and the most powerful of the gods. Odin feeds exclusively on ale and wine, and he feeds all the rest of the food to his wolves. Therefore, the wolves get all the offerings for Odin. In Scandinavian mythology, wolves were friends and enemies of the gods. As mentioned earlier, the two wolves were Odin's companions, but that doesn't mean they were friends of others in Asgard, the home of the gods.

Geri and Freki wandered around the great hall, walking among the souls of human warriors. Therefore, people in battle considered Geri and Freki to be signs of Odin's presence. Usually, the gray wolf seen on the battlefield was a positive sign for the warriors, because they believed that the animal would lead their spirit to Valhalla if they died in battle. In Scandinavian mythology, Odin's wolves were not only his "pets", they were very brave and loyal and joined his divine master in battles. Odin's wolves Geri and Freki are symbols of the loyalty of all Odin's servants to their god. A symbol of the superiority of its master over all others. The ancient Scandinavians believed that wolves were creatures that helped the Valkyries transport fallen warriors to Valhalla and the hall of the afterlife of the slain.
