Symbolism of Thor

• God of Thunder — Thor commanded the storms; when lightning flashed and thunder rolled, the Norse heard him driving his chariot across the sky, pulled by his two goats Tanngrisnir and Tann gjóstr
• Protector of Mankind — unlike Odin, who favoured kings and warriors, Thor was the god of the common people — farmers, sailors, and craftsmen called on him for protection and fair weather
• Slayer of Giants — Thor’s primary role was to defend Asgard and Midgard from the Jötunns (giants) who constantly threatened the ordered world; Mjölnir was his instrument of cosmic order
• Strength & Reliability — Thor embodied the Norse virtues of physical courage, straightforward strength, and unwavering loyalty to those under his protection
• The Red Beard — Thor was depicted with a great red beard, a belt of strength called Megingjord that doubled his already immense power, and iron gauntlets to wield Mjölnir
