Zagreus — the Great Hunter, the first Dionysus, the god who died and was reborn — stands at the heart of the Orphic mysteries as one of the most profound and enigmatic figures in Greek mythology. Son of Zeus and Persephone, conceived when Zeus came to her in the form of a serpent, Zagreus was destined for supreme power — seated beside his father on the throne of heaven and given the golden lightning and divine sceptre from birth. Torn apart by the Titans and reborn as Dionysus, his myth is the ultimate story of death, transformation, and the indestructibility of the divine soul. This hand-carved ash wood statue captures his luminous, liminal presence, part of our Greek statues collection , finished with a lacquer that honours every carved detail.
Each piece is individually crafted — no two are identical. The carving renders Zagreus with the quiet authority of a god who has passed through death and returned — a powerful centrepiece for Orphic practice, Greek mythology devotion, or esoteric altar work.

Zagreus in Greek & Orphic Mythology
- Identity: The “Great Hunter” and first Dionysus of the Orphic tradition — son of Zeus and Persephone, conceived when Zeus came to her in the form of a serpent, and destined from birth to inherit the throne of heaven
- The divine child: At birth, Zeus seated Zagreus beside him on the celestial throne and gave him the golden lightning and divine sceptre — declaring him heir to all of heaven and earth
- Death & dismemberment: The Titans, sent by Hera, lured the child Zagreus with mirrors and toys, then tore him into seven pieces — consuming him before Zeus destroyed them with his lightning
- Rebirth as Dionysus: From the ashes of the Titans, humanity was born — carrying within them a spark of the divine Zagreus. His heart, saved by Athena, was used by Zeus to conceive Dionysus — making Zagreus and Dionysus one continuous divine being
- Symbolism: Represents the cycle of death and rebirth, the indestructibility of the divine soul, and the Orphic promise that the divine spark within each person can be purified and returned to the gods
Ideal For
- Practitioners of Orphic spirituality, Greek polytheism, and mystery tradition devotion
