Anubis is known as the god of death and is the oldest and most popular of the ancient Egyptian deities. The ancient Egyptians held Anubis in high regard because they believed that he had great power over them physically and spiritually when they died.

Anubis was born of Osiris, god of death and resurrection, and Nephthys, goddess of the dead. Nephthys hid the newborn Anubis from her husband Seth in the swamps of the Nile Delta. The mother goddess Isis found the young god and raised him.

Later, when Set killed Osiris, Anubis, organizing the burial of the deceased god, wrapped his body in fabrics soaked in a special composition, thus making the first mummy. Therefore, Anubis is considered the creator of funeral rites, the patron of necropolises, and is called the god of embalming. Anubis helped preserve the body of Osiris. Anubis also helped judge the dead and accompanied the righteous to the throne of Osiris.

In almost every religion there are prerequisites for animism - the belief in the animation of nature. During the period of animistic representations, from 3100 to 2686 BC, Anubis was strongly associated with the jackal or the dog Sab (some see it as similar to the Doberman). But since religion did not stand still, soon the image of the guardian of the underworld was modernized: Anubis was depicted with the head of an animal and with a human body.

In ancient history, Anubis was known as the absolute ruler of the underworld (called the Duat). Later, this role passed to Osiris.
"Keeper of the Scales": one of his many roles, his task was to determine the fate of the souls of the dead. As depicted in the Book of the Dead, Anubis weighed the heart of the dead on a feather scale.
The pen represents falsehood or truth. If the scale of justice were directed towards the heart, the dead person would be devoured by Ammit, a female demon dubbed the "eater of the dead".

And if the scale of justice leaned towards the pen, Anubis would bring the deceased to Osiris, who would help him ascend to heaven for a worthy existence. God of Embalming and Mummification: Anubis played an important role in overseeing the embalming and mummification of the dead.

Anubis' daughter (Kebeshet) is often seen as his assistant in the process of mummifying the dead. The ancient Egyptians believed that Anubis anointed the bodies of the dead so that they retained the sweet smell of herbs and plants.

Anubis is one of the most recognizable gods of Egypt thanks to his recurring depiction in pop culture. However, popular culture portrays him with evil forces and a dangerous army. The god of death remains a popular figure and today, according to legend, he outlived the god himself.
