In India and Southeast Asia, the buffalo is a sacred animal. Yama, the Hindu and Buddhist god of death, rides a buffalo. The buffalo heart is a symbol of death in Tibet. In China, the calm power of a domestic buffalo is associated with a contemplative life: according to legend, the sage Lao Tzu left China riding a buffalo.

In North America, the bison (a common name for several types of buffalo) symbolizes the power of the whirlwind, but also prosperity and male fertility.

Bison, strictly speaking, is an American buffalo. And for the Indians, he has always been a symbol of a rich life, abundance, and prosperity in the truest sense of the word: the whole life of the Indians depended on hunting buffalo.

An Indian legend says that once a woman dressed in white buffalo skin came to people and revealed all the secrets of life on Earth, taught them how to get food and take care of the future. Having taught people how to live and pray correctly, she hit the ground, turned into a small white buffalo, and disappeared. It was she who revealed to people the main secret: honor the animals you hunt, respect them and pay tribute to their souls. Otherwise, wealth and abundance will leave you forever.

And indeed: hunting buffalo for food, the Indians never lost a sense of proportion, treated their "breadwinners" with respect, and got exactly as much meat and skins as needed for the survival of the tribe.

Bison, buffalo, bull - a controversial symbol among many peoples who knew about the complex nature of the animal. Yes, it has always been a symbol of abundance and peaceful strength. But those who saw the buffalo in anger and rage, who became the object of the attack, know how terrible it is at such moments - it cannot be stopped. Hunting a buffalo is just as dangerous as hunting an elephant or a lion.

That is why this symbol is complex and ambiguous - a prudent force that is difficult to bring "over the banks", but if this happens, you are faced with the elements of destruction in all its horror.

Buddhists believe that the buffalo is a messenger from the afterlife, on whose back the god of death Yama, who rules the land of the dead, often sits. And even the heart of a buffalo is a symbol of death.

The Dakota Indians, noticing how bison protect their cubs and females, made the animal a symbol of responsibility, powerful protection, solidarity, and courage.

The buffalo God of the Oglala Indians patronized young girls who were just entering adulthood and supported the best feminine qualities in them - chastity, maternal instinct, and kindness.
In North America, the Indians called bison "buffalo" and were very afraid to meet a white bull. For them, it was a symbol of world upheavals and natural disasters.
