Holly King and Oak King are characters of English folklore, eternal opponents, each of whom owns half of the year: Holly King is dark (winter), and Oak King is light (summer). Holly, the mythical brother of the Oak, has long been popular and loved by many peoples around the world. It should be noted that, according to the botanical classification, these plants are not related, they belong to different families: the oak belongs to the Beech family, and the holly belongs to the Holly family. In many Celtic neo-pagan traditions, there is an eternal legend about the battle between the King of the Oak and King Holly.

These two powerful rulers vie for supremacy as the Wheel of the Year spins each season. During the Winter Solstice or Yule, the Oak King defeats the Holly King and then reigns until mid-summer or Lita. As soon as the Summer Solstice arrives, King Holly returns to fight the old king and defeats him. In the legends of some belief systems, the dates of these events are shifted; the battle takes place at the Equinox, so the King of the Oak is strongest in midsummer, or Lita, and King Holly dominates during Yule.

The Oak King is born on Yule and his influence and strength grow, peaking in Beltane, and then weakens and dies on Samhain. The Holly King is born on the Summer Solstice, and his power grows throughout the summer, reaching a peak on Samhain. He dies in Beltane. It turns out they live at the same time but have different levels of influence in the year. In any case, each King presents a different idea. Summertime of the Oak King for growth, change, development, healing, and new projects.

Holly King's wintertime for relaxation, meditation, training, and dark sorcery. In general, King Holly represents darkness, extinction, destruction, and cold. Trees were sacred to the ancient Aryans, especially among the Celts. During the summer, the mighty oaks are the most visible trees in the forest, and in the winter, when all the leaves fall, the evergreen holly stands in bright green with red berries among the bare trunks. In summer, the holly is lost among the rest of the greenery.

It is interesting to note that kings are defeated in their full strength and splendor. Indeed, when the Holly King wins Yule and the oak stands naked in the forest, the Sun begins to return and the Oak King begins to regain his dominance until Mid-Summer when the oak trees are full of green, but the Sun begins to wane.
