Round-bellied, bright-eyed, and perpetually cheerful — the Tanuki is Japan’s most beloved bringer of good fortune. This compact figurine captures the classic Tanuki in its most iconic form: the large eyes that see opportunity where others see none, the generous belly that speaks of abundance and contentment, the fluffy tail that sweeps luck into the home. In Japanese folklore, the Tanuki is a shape-shifting forest spirit, a trickster, and a divine patron of prosperity — its rotund statues placed outside homes and shops across Japan to welcome good fortune and ward off misfortune. Unlike its taller companion, this smaller Tanuki is designed for intimate spaces — a desk, a windowsill, a pocket altar — bringing its cheerful energy wherever it is placed. Hand-carved in ash wood with care in our family workshop.
Statue Characteristics
- Material — Ecological Ash Wood: Sustainably sourced ash holds fine figurative carving beautifully.
- Finish — Hand-Applied Varnish: Seals the wood and enhances its natural warmth.
- Dimensions — 5.1" H × 3.3" W × 2.2" D (13 × 8.5 × 5.8 cm): A compact lucky charm — ideal for a desk, shelf, windowsill, or travel.
- One-of-a-Kind Design: Each piece is unique due to natural wood grain — no two are exactly alike.
Symbolism of the Tanuki
- Large Eyes — the Tanuki’s wide eyes represent insight and the ability to spot opportunity; they see what others miss and find the path to good fortune
- Round Belly — the generous belly symbolises abundance, contentment, and the generosity of spirit that attracts prosperity
- Fluffy Tail — the tail sweeps luck into the home and keeps misfortune at bay; it is a symbol of comfort, warmth, and fertility
- Shape-Shifter & Trickster — the Tanuki is one of Japan’s great shape-shifting spirits, using its magic with a sense of humour and a love of life
- Prosperity Talisman — Tanuki statues are placed outside homes and businesses across Japan to attract good fortune, financial success, and positive energy
Let this little Tanuki find its spot in your space and do what Tanuki do best — attract luck, spark joy, and remind you not to take life too seriously. It sits happily alongside the gods and spirits of our Japanese collection, the smallest but perhaps the most cheerful of them all.
