In the East, the tortoise is the image of the universe itself. The shell of a tortoise is round on top, like the vault of heaven, and flat on the bottom, like the earth. One of the most popular gods of ancient Greece was Hermes - a messenger between the worlds. Apollo himself turned into a tortoise to marry Dryope. Hermes turned the nymph Egelon into a turtle for joking about the union of Jupiter with Juno.

Finally, the tortoise appears with Aphrodite in her form of Urania: the statue at Olympia depicts Aphrodite Urania resting one foot on the tortoise. Plutarch explains such a neighborhood by the fact that "virgins need protection, and married women are stuck in domesticity and silence."
