Zagreus from ancient Greek translates as "the great hunter". The son of Zeus of Crete and the goddess Persephone, with whom Zeus married in the form of a serpent.

Immediately, at birth, the heavenly Zeus gave his son his golden lightning and the divine scepter, seating him next to him on the throne. Little Zagreus often played with his father's lightning, deftly throwing him down to the ground. Golden lightning in an instant pierced the sky, soundlessly crashing into the ground.

Little Zagreus was handsome: from his mother, he got skin as snow-white as the snow of the earth, and from his father long hair, golden like his lightning. He lived in a cave, in the great mountain Ida, where the baby was entertained by kurets, who were still protecting Zeus himself from his evil father, Kronos. Sometimes Zagreus would take the swords and darts of the kuretas and jump with them along the green slopes of the mountain, imitating his guards and his father. The little god was spoon-fed ragweed; the kid ate and laughed. Zeus rejoiced to watch from afar the playing son. Once the heavenly god, even with joy, announced to everyone that he would leave heaven and earth to his son.
