Vidar is the son of Odin and the giantess Gríðr, famed for his silence and his role as avenger — destined to slay the great wolf Fenrir after it swallows Odin at Ragnarök, and to rule in the reborn world that follows. His name is believed to mean "one whose domain is vast," and his hall Láðvir (Landvidi) stands in a primeval forest of green branches and fresh flowers.
