Bragi, the god of poetry and eloquence, held a revered place among the Norse gods. Known as the bard of Asgard, Bragi was the one who sang of the great deeds of gods and warriors in the halls of Valhalla. His name comes from the Old Norse word bragr, meaning “poetry” or “the best,” reflecting his excellence in storytelling and wisdom.

Origins and Role in Mythology

Bragi was believed to be the son of Odin, and possibly the giantess Gunnlod, from whom Odin stole the Mead of Poetry—a magical elixir that bestowed poetic talent and wisdom. Some legends say this mead was later given to Bragi, making him the divine patron of poets and skalds.

He resided in Valhalla, where he welcomed fallen warriors with songs of their heroic deeds. His words were so powerful they could stir courage in the fiercest hearts.
