About Bragi – The Norse God of Poetry

Bragi, the god of poetry and eloquence, held a revered place among the Norse gods. Known as the bard of Asgard, Bragi was the one who sang of the great deeds of gods and warriors in the halls of Valhalla. His name comes from the Old Norse word bragr, meaning “poetry” or “the best,” reflecting his excellence in storytelling and wisdom.

Origins and Role in Mythology

Bragi was believed to be the son of Odin, and possibly the giantess Gunnlod, from whom Odin stole the Mead of Poetry—a magical elixir that bestowed poetic talent and wisdom. Some legends say this mead was later given to Bragi, making him the divine patron of poets and skalds.

He resided in Valhalla, where he welcomed fallen warriors with songs of their heroic deeds. His words were so powerful they could stir courage in the fiercest hearts. Bragi was often depicted as an elderly, wise figure with a long beard and runes carved on his tongue, symbolizing the sacred power of language.

Relationship with Idunn

Bragi was married to Idunn, the goddess who guarded the apples of immortality. Their union represented the eternal bond between artistic inspiration and youth, poetry and timelessness.

The Mead of Poetry

According to myth, the Mead of Poetry was created from the blood of Kvasir, a being of immense wisdom. After Kvasir’s death, the mead passed through many hands until Odin retrieved it from the giant Suttungr. It is said that Bragi, more than any other, embodied the essence of this sacred drink, shaping the songs and sagas that carried Norse culture through the ages.

Conflict with Loki

At Ægir’s feast, Bragi confronted Loki, who had insulted the gods. True to his nature, Bragi tried to defuse the situation with poetic wit. Loki mocked Bragi for his nonviolent nature, calling him weak for relying on words instead of weapons. Bragi’s response highlighted his identity as a god of intellect and expression rather than battle—a voice of reason in a world of warriors.

Cultural Legacy

Bragi’s influence extended beyond myth. Vikings honored him by drinking the Bragarfull or “Bragi’s cup” during feasts, often while making important oaths. He remains a lasting symbol of poetic inspiration, eloquence, and the transformative power of language.

This statue of Bragi is more than a decorative item—it is a representation of the profound role storytelling and wisdom played in Norse culture. A powerful addition to any collection, it serves as a reminder of the enduring strength of words and the legacy of the gods who shaped the world through myth and meaning.
