On a cold December morning in 1531, on the hill of Tepeyac near Mexico City, a young woman appeared to the peasant Juan Diego — radiant, clothed in stars, standing on a crescent moon. She spoke to him in his own language, Nahuatl, and asked that a temple be built in her honour. When the sceptical bishop demanded proof, she filled Juan Diego’s cloak with Castilian roses that had no business blooming in winter — and when he opened the cloak before the bishop, her image had been miraculously imprinted on the fabric. That image — Nuestra Señora de Guadalupe — has never faded in nearly five centuries. She is the most venerated religious image in Latin America, the patroness of Mexico, and the protector of all unborn children. This Nuestra Señora de Guadalupe Wall Plaque honours her in hand-carved ash wood, shaped with care in our family workshop.

Plaque Characteristics

  • Material — Ecological Ash Wood: Sustainably sourced ash provides a tight, even grain that holds fine figurative carving beautifully.
  • Finish — Hand-Applied Varnish: A protective varnish finish seals the wood and enhances its natural warmth.
  • Dimensions — 14.4" H × 10.7" W × 1.0" D (37 × 27 × 2.6 cm): A tall portrait-format panel — devotional and striking on any wall or altar.
  • One-of-a-Kind Design: Each piece is unique due to natural wood grain and tone — no two are exactly alike.

Symbolism of Nuestra Señora de Guadalupe

  • The Apparition — she appeared four times to Juan Diego in December 1531, speaking in Nahuatl and asking for a temple to be built at Tepeyac, a site already sacred to the indigenous people
  • The Miraculous Image — her image on Juan Diego’s tilma (cloak) has never faded or deteriorated in nearly 500 years; it is venerated at the Basilica of Guadalupe in Mexico City, one of the most visited Catholic shrines in the world
  • Patroness of Mexico — on December 12, hundreds of thousands of pilgrims travel to the Basilica to honour her feast day — the most important religious celebration in Mexico
  • Protector of the Unborn — she is venerated as the patroness of all unborn children and a symbol of maternal love and divine protection
  • Bridge Between Worlds — her image blends Catholic and indigenous Aztec symbolism, making her a profound symbol of cultural unity and spiritual continuity

Rooted in the devotional tradition of our Mexican Heritage & Aztec Mythology collection, this plaque is a testament to the artisan craft found in our wooden wall plaque collection — a piece of living faith, beautifully rendered in wood.
