Her name means “Mistress” — and in the Norse world, no title carried more weight. Freyja was the most beloved of all the gods: goddess of love, beauty, fertility, and desire, but also of war, death, and the deepest magic known to the Norse cosmos. She was the first to practice seidr — the shamanic magic of fate and transformation — and she taught it to Odin himself. She rode a chariot pulled by two great cats, wore the legendary necklace Brísinga men, and chose half of all warriors slain in battle to dwell in her hall Fólkvangr. She wept tears of red gold for her lost husband Óðr, and her heart was so full of tenderness that she sympathised with the suffering of all. This Freyja Wall Plaque honours the most radiant and complex goddess in Norse mythology, hand-carved in ash wood in our family workshop.
Plaque Characteristics
- Material — Ecological Ash Wood: Sustainably sourced ash provides a tight, even grain that holds fine figurative carving beautifully.
- Finish — Hand-Applied Varnish: A protective varnish finish seals the wood and enhances its natural warmth.
- Dimensions — 14.1" H × 6.4" W × 1.5" D (36 × 16.5 × 4 cm): A tall, slender portrait panel — elegant and striking on any wall or altar.
- One-of-a-Kind Design: Each piece is unique due to natural wood grain and tone — no two are exactly alike.
Symbolism of Freyja
- Love & Beauty — Freyja was the goddess of love, desire, and beauty; in the whole Norse world, no goddess equalled her in radiance — neither among gods nor among mortals
- Fertility & Abundance — she patronised fertility, the harvest, and the cycles of nature; her blessing was sought by those hoping for children, good crops, and prosperous lives
- Magic & Seidr — Freyja was the first practitioner of seidr, the Norse shamanic magic of fate and transformation; she taught it to Odin, making her the source of the Allfather’s greatest power
- War & the Fallen — she chose half of all warriors slain in battle to dwell in her hall Fólkvangr; she was as much a goddess of death as of life
- The Cats & Brísinga men — her chariot was pulled by two great cats, and she wore the legendary necklace Brísinga men, the most beautiful object in the nine worlds
Drawing from the mythic depths of our Norse collection, this Freyja plaque is more than just decor. It is a testament to the artisan craft found in our wooden wall plaques, bridging the ancient power of the goddess with a presence that graces every room it enters.
