Hel is the daughter of Loki and the giantess Angrboda, cast by Odin into the realm beneath the roots of Yggdrasil to rule over those who do not die in battle. Her kingdom is not a place of torment — it is cold, quiet, and final. She receives the dead with absolute fairness and cannot be moved by sentiment or pleading.
