Hel does not punish the dead. She receives them. This compact hand-carved ash wood statue captures the Norse queen of Helheim in her dual nature — one half living, one half corpse, both held in the same still composure. A smaller altar piece for those who work with the goddess who governs the vast majority of the dead: everyone who dies not in battle but in the ordinary, inevitable way. Each piece is individually carved and finished with varnish by skilled artisans in Ukraine.

Hel — Queen of Helheim, Daughter of Loki

Hel is the daughter of Loki and the giantess Angrboda, cast by Odin into the realm beneath the roots of Yggdrasil to rule over those who do not die in battle. Her kingdom is not a place of torment — it is cold, quiet, and final. She receives the dead with absolute fairness and cannot be moved by sentiment or pleading. When the gods sent emissaries to beg for Baldr’s return, she agreed on the condition that every being in the nine worlds wept for him. One refused. Baldr stayed. Her word held.

Among the Norse gods, Hel is the one who understands that death is not a mistake to be corrected but a truth to be accepted. For those who want to understand her mythology and how she is honoured in modern practice, the guide to Hel’s mythology and altar work covers this in full.

Frequently Asked Questions

What size is the mini Hel statue and what material is it made from?

The mini Hel statue is hand-carved from ecological ash wood with a varnish finish. It measures 5.9 in / 15 cm tall, 3.9 in / 10 cm wide, and 1.3 in / 3.5 cm deep. Available in dark brown and brown finishes. Each piece is individually carved by hand in Ukraine.

Who is Hel and what is her role in Norse mythology?

Hel is the Norse goddess of death and queen of Helheim — the realm beneath the roots of Yggdrasil where those who die of illness, old age, or ordinary life find their rest. She is the daughter of Loki and the giantess Angrboda. Her domain is not a place of punishment but of inevitability — cold, quiet, and final. She is depicted with one half of her face living and the other half a corpse, embodying the truth that life and death are two aspects of the same reality. She governs the dead with absolute fairness and cannot be moved by sentiment or pleading.

How do I use a mini Hel statue on my altar?

Place the mini Hel statue on an altar dedicated to ancestors, the dead, or the acceptance of mortality. Its compact size makes it ideal for travel altars, desk shrines, or smaller sacred spaces. Pair with black candles and offerings of food and drink left for the dead. She is most powerfully honoured at Samhain and during ancestor work, when the boundary between the living and the dead is thinnest. Invoke her for shadow work, acceptance of loss, and any practice centred on the truth that endings are part of the cycle.

Lovely little Hela! On Her altar now.

She’s small, mighty, and fierce. Just as shown here, and I love her 💛💀🗡 Needed a no-nonsense crone goddess for my altar… Through shops like Art Carving, I discovered Hel (perhaps Viking ancestors guided me?). But this portrayal most drew me. Thank you!
