Two death deities. Two mythologies. One carved piece. This hand-carved ash wood statue brings together Hel, the Norse goddess of the dead, and Anubis, the Egyptian god of the afterlife — two psychopomps from opposite ends of the ancient world who share the same essential role: to receive the dead, to judge them fairly, and to ensure they reach what comes next. Each statue is individually carved and finished with varnish by skilled artisans in Ukraine; no two are identical.
Hel & Anubis — Two Guardians of the Threshold
Hel is the daughter of Loki and the ruler of Helheim — the Norse realm of the dead that receives all who die of illness, old age, or any death outside of battle. She is half living, half dead, her body divided between the warmth of the living world and the cold of the realm she governs. She is not a goddess of punishment. She is a goddess of rest — the one who receives the exhausted, the ordinary, the ones who simply lived and died, and gives them a place to be.
Anubis is the jackal-headed Egyptian god of embalming and the afterlife, one of the oldest deities in the Egyptian pantheon. He performed the first mummification, guards the dead in their tombs, and weighs the heart of the deceased against the feather of Ma'at in the Hall of Two Truths. He is not a god of punishment either. He is a god of honest reckoning — the one who holds the scale steady and lets the truth of a life speak for itself.
Together on a single altar, they represent the universality of death across cultures — the recognition that every tradition, in every part of the world, has found it necessary to name the ones who stand at the boundary and make the crossing safe. Frequently Asked Questions
What size is the Hel and Anubis statue and what material is it made from?
The Hel and Anubis statue is hand-carved from ecological ash wood with a varnish finish. It measures 8.0 in / 20.5 cm tall, 5.1 in / 13.2 cm wide, and 1.3 in / 3.5 cm deep.
What is the connection between Hel and Anubis?
Hel and Anubis are psychopomps from two different mythological traditions — Norse and Egyptian — who share the same essential role: receiving the dead, judging them fairly, and guiding them to what comes next. Hel rules Helheim, the Norse realm of those who die outside of battle, offering rest rather than punishment. Anubis weighs the heart of the deceased against the feather of Ma'at and guides the worthy to Osiris. Together they represent the universality of death across ancient cultures.
How do I use a dual-deity Hel and Anubis statue on my altar?
This statue works as a centrepiece for altars dedicated to ancestor veneration, death work, or cross-traditional practice. Pair it with black candles, obsidian, and offerings appropriate to both traditions — water and incense (frankincense or myrrh) for Anubis, and cool-toned offerings or representations of rest for Hel. It is particularly powerful at Samhain, when both Norse and Egyptian traditions honour the dead, and at the dark moon.
