Hekate is one of the oldest and most powerful goddesses in the Greek world — older than the Olympians, born of the Titans Perses and Asteria, and endowed by Zeus himself with dominion over earth, sea, and sky. She was the goddess of the moon, the night, and the underworld; the guardian of thresholds and the keeper of the keys to the realm of the dead. In ancient times, her statues were placed at crossroads to ward off evil spirits, vampires, and demons — for it was believed that Hekate alone had the power to destroy the creatures of the night. Symbolism of Hekate

• Goddess of the Crossroads — Hekate presided over crossroads, the liminal spaces between worlds; her triple-form statues were placed where three roads met, guarding travellers and warding off evil
• The Torch — she is most often depicted holding a torch, illuminating the darkness of the underworld and guiding souls through the night; the Statue of Liberty, with her raised torch and crown of rays, is thought by some scholars to echo Hekate’s iconography
• Keys & the Underworld — Hekate held the keys to Hades; she was the only deity who could move freely between the worlds of the living and the dead
• Magic & Witchcraft — in the classical era she became the supreme goddess of magic, witchcraft, and sorcery; she is the patron of all who work with the hidden forces of the world
