Lilith — First Woman, Night Goddess, Queen of Independence
Lilith appears first in Sumerian texts as a wind spirit — wild, nocturnal, untameable. In Hebrew tradition she becomes the first woman, created equal to Adam, who refuses subordination and walks out of Eden of her own will. Every tradition that followed tried to make her a warning. None of them succeeded. She endured as a symbol precisely because the refusal she embodies is one that resonates across time: the refusal to diminish yourself to fit a role that was never made for you.
In modern pagan and occult practice she is invoked for independence, shadow work, the reclamation of suppressed power, and the full expression of the self without apology. She is particularly honoured at Samhain, when the veil is thin and the dark feminine is at her most present. She belongs in the company of goddesses who ask nothing of you except that you be honest about who you are.
