This hand-carved Gefjon statue is cut from solid ash wood and finished with a protective varnish — a rare and meaningful piece for Norse pagan altars, Asatru sacred spaces, or Scandinavian mythology collections. Standing 8 inches tall, it honours one of the most powerful yet lesser-known goddesses of the Aesir: the generous giver, the first mother of Denmark, and the deity who literally shaped the land.

Gefjon (Old Norse Gefön, from “geben” — “to give”) is the Norse goddess of luck, fertility, agriculture, and blessings. She is the patroness of virginity and wisdom, and like Odin, she is said to know the fate of the world. Her most celebrated myth is recorded in the Gylfaginning of the Prose Edda: disguised as a beggar, she enchanted King Gylfi of Sweden with her song, and he promised her as much land as she could plough in a single day and night. She transformed her four giant sons into oxen and ploughed so deeply that the land broke away from Sweden entirely — the oxen dragged it south through the sea, where it became the Danish island of Zealand. What remained in Sweden became Lake Mälaren, whose bays still mirror the contours of Zealand’s coastline. Gefjon is revered as the protector of Denmark and the patron of all who work the earth. Frequently Asked Questions

What material and size is the Gefjon statue?

The Gefjon statue is hand-carved from solid ash wood and finished with a protective varnish coating. It stands 8 inches (21 cm) tall, 5.1 inches (13 cm) wide, and 2.1 inches (5.5 cm) deep — a substantial, display-ready size for Norse pagan altars, Asatru sacred spaces, or Scandinavian mythology collections.

Who is Gefjon in Norse mythology?

Gefjon (Old Norse Gefön, from "geben" — "to give") is the Norse goddess of luck, fertility, agriculture, and blessings — one of the Aesir, and like Odin, said to know the fate of the world. Her most celebrated myth, recorded in the Gylfaginning of the Prose Edda, tells how she disguised herself as a beggar, enchanted King Gylfi of Sweden with her song, and was promised as much land as she could plough in a day and night. She transformed her four giant sons into oxen and ploughed so deeply that the land broke away from Sweden — the oxen dragged it south through the sea, where it became the Danish island of Zealand. What remained in Sweden became Lake Mälaren. She is revered as the protector of Denmark and patron of all who work the earth.

How is a Gefjon statue used on a Norse pagan altar?

A Gefjon statue is placed on Norse pagan or Asatru altars as a focal point for invoking blessings of fertility, abundance, and agricultural prosperity. She is called upon for land blessings, garden and harvest rituals, and prayers for new beginnings — her energy is generous, grounding, and deeply connected to the earth. Offerings traditionally associated with earth goddesses work well: grain, seeds, flowers, and mead. For practitioners working with the Aesir, Gefjon is a powerful but often overlooked deity whose wisdom and generosity make her a meaningful addition to any Norse altar.
