Gefjon Statue – Hand-Carved Ash Wood Norse Goddess of Fertility and Agriculture

The Gefjon statue is hand-carved from solid ash wood and finished with a protective varnish coating. Gefjon (Old Norse Gefön, from "geben" — "to give") is the Norse goddess of luck, fertility, agriculture, and blessings — one of the Aesir, and like Odin, said to know the fate of the world. Her most celebrated myth, recorded in the Gylfaginning of the Prose Edda, tells how she disguised herself as a beggar, enchanted King Gylfi of Sweden with her song, and was promised as much land as she could plough in a day and night. She transformed her four giant sons into oxen and ploughed so deeply that the land broke away from Sweden — the oxen dragged it south through the sea, where it became the Danish island of Zealand. What remained in Sweden became Lake Mälaren. She is revered as the protector of Denmark and patron of all who work the earth.
