Tyr is the god who put his hand in Fenrir's mouth so the other gods could bind the wolf — knowing full well what it would cost him. This hand-carved ash wood statue honours the Norse god of justice, law, and the courage to do what is right regardless of the personal cost. Each piece is individually carved and finished with varnish by skilled artisans in Ukraine. Dimensions: 8.1 in / 20.5 cm tall, 4 in / 10.2 cm wide, 1.6 in / 4 cm deep.

Tyr — The One-Handed God of Justice

Tyr is one of the oldest gods in the Norse pantheon — older, some scholars argue, than Odin himself. His name is cognate with the Proto-Germanic word for god, and in the earliest Germanic traditions he was the sky father, the lawgiver, the one who held the order of the cosmos together. By the Viking Age his role had narrowed but deepened: he became the god of justice, of oaths, of the courage required to uphold what is right when it is costly to do so.

The story of Fenrir is the story that defines him. The gods needed to bind the great wolf before he could bring about Ragnarök, but Fenrir would only allow the binding if one of the gods placed a hand in his mouth as a pledge of good faith. Tyr volunteered. When the binding held and Fenrir realised he had been deceived, he bit off Tyr's hand. Tyr lost the hand. The world was protected. Among the Norse gods, he is the one who understood that justice sometimes requires sacrifice — and made that sacrifice without hesitation.
