Samael occupies one of the most complex positions in the Abrahamic tradition — simultaneously an archangel and the angel of death, the adversary and the divine instrument. In the Talmud he appears as both accuser and executioner, arriving for sinners with a serrated blade while Gabriel takes the righteous. In Jewish demonology he is the chief of demons, identified with Lucifer and the serpent of Eden. According to legend, it was Samael who seduced Eve in the form of a serpent, fathering Cain — the first killer. He is also said to have taken Lilith as his consort after she fled Adam, making him a central figure in the mythology of the dark divine feminine.
