Hel does not punish the dead. She receives them. As queen of Helheim — the Norse realm where those who die of illness, old age, and ordinary life find their rest — she is not a goddess of torment but of inevitability. This hand-carved ash wood statue captures her dual nature: one half the face of a living woman, one half the face of a corpse, both held in the same still composure. Each piece is individually carved and finished with varnish by skilled artisans in Ukraine. Dimensions: 7.9 in / 20.3 cm tall, 4.6 in / 11.7 cm wide, 2 in / 5.2 cm deep.

Hel — Queen of Helheim, Daughter of Loki

Hel is the daughter of Loki and the giantess Angrboda — sister to Fenrir and Jörmungandr — and was cast by Odin into the realm beneath the roots of Yggdrasil to rule over those who do not die in battle. Her kingdom is not a place of punishment. It is a place of rest: cold, quiet, and final. She receives the vast majority of the dead — everyone who dies of sickness, old age, accident, or simply the passage of time — and she governs them with the same uncompromising fairness she brings to everything.

What makes Hel remarkable among the Norse gods is her refusal to be moved by sentiment. When the gods sent emissaries to Helheim to beg for Baldr’s return, Hel agreed — on the condition that every being in the nine worlds wept for him. One giantess refused. Baldr stayed. Hel’s word held. She is the goddess who understands that death is not a mistake to be corrected but a truth to be accepted — and that the acceptance of that truth is itself a form of wisdom. For a deeper look at her mythology and how she is honoured in modern practice, the guide to Hel’s mythology and altar work covers this in full.
