This hand-carved Skadi statue captures the Norse goddess of winter in her mountain domain — fur-clad, bow in hand, surrounded by ancient ferns and forest, with a wolf at her feet and runes carved into the base. Carved from solid ash wood and finished with varnish, it stands nearly 8 inches tall and is a powerful altar piece for Asatru practice, Norse paganism, or any devotion to the wild and independent feminine. Each piece is individually carved in Ukraine.
Skáði is a jötunn — a frost giantess — who claimed her place among the Aesir through sheer force of will. When the gods killed her father Thjazi, she marched into Asgard armed and demanded recompense. She won it: the right to choose a husband from among the gods, and the right to laugh. She chose Njord by his feet alone — mistaking him for Baldr — and the marriage between mountain and sea did not last, but her standing among the Norse gods and goddesses was never in question. She is the patroness of skiing, archery, hunting, and all winter sports; her arrows never miss. She is perhaps the most fiercely independent of all the Scandinavian goddesses — she lives where she chooses, on her own terms, in the mountains she loves. She does not forget insults, and she does not forgive them lightly. Her energy is especially potent at the Yule winter solstice, when the long dark night is at its deepest and the wild cold is her domain.
