Long before the Romans arrived in the Alpine lands of the Helvetians, there was Artio — the bear goddess who ruled over forests, wild animals, and the abundance of the earth. Her name survives in the ancient city of Bern, whose very symbol is the bear she embodied. She is mentioned alongside Cernunnos, the horned god of the forests, and like him she stands at the threshold between the human world and the wild. She rules over transformation: the female bear enters hibernation pregnant in autumn and emerges in spring with new life — a living symbol of death, rebirth, and the wisdom gained in darkness. This hand-crafted Artio statue is a centrepiece of our Celtic statues collection, where the gods and goddesses of the ancient world take form in ecological ash wood, crafted in Ukraine and finished with warm varnish.

Each piece is individually crafted, making every Artio a unique original.

Artio in Celtic Mythology

  • Goddess of the Helvetians: Patroness of game and wild animals, worshipped by the Celtic tribe of the Helvetians in what is now Switzerland
  • Patroness of Bern: The city of Bern takes its name and its bear symbol from Artio — her legacy is carved into the landscape of Europe
  • Companion of Cernunnos: Mentioned alongside the horned god of the forests, she shares dominion over the wild and untamed natural world
  • Goddess of Transformation: The hibernating bear — pregnant in darkness, reborn in spring — makes Artio a symbol of cycles, renewal, and shamanic wisdom
  • Goddess of Abundance: She restores the fields after harvest, carrying the power of fertility and the generosity of the earth

Artio is one of the least known Celtic goddesses — and one of the most powerful. If her ancient energy speaks to you, this piece was crafted for your space. While Artio belongs to the Celtic world, her bear spirit connects deeply with the animal totems of the north — explore the full range in our Sacred Northern Totems collection, and discover the sacred feminine further among our Wiccan & Pagan Altar Statues.
