In Celtic tradition, the tree was never merely a plant — it was a living axis between worlds, its roots reaching into the earth of the ancestors and its branches touching the realm of the gods. The Crann Betíoch, or Tree of Life, was the sacred heart of the Celtic cosmos: a symbol of connection, continuity, and the unbreakable bond between all living things. In this hand-carved plaque, a raven perches among the branches and a serpent coils at the roots — two of the most powerful symbols in Celtic mythology, woven into the eternal knotwork of the tree itself. The Celtic Tree of Life Wall Plaque is a complete cosmological statement in ash wood, shaped with care in our family workshop.
Plaque Characteristics
- Material — Ecological Ash Wood: Sustainably sourced ash provides a tight, even grain that holds intricate knotwork and figurative carving beautifully.
- Finish — Hand-Applied Varnish: A protective varnish finish seals the wood and enhances its natural warmth.
- Dimensions — 12.4" H × 10.4" W × 1.7" D (31.5 × 26.5 × 4.5 cm): A substantial, wall-commanding presence — ideal for a living room, hallway, or altar space.
- One-of-a-Kind Design: Each piece is unique due to natural wood grain and tone — no two are exactly alike.
Symbolism of the Celtic Tree of Life
- The Tree — bridges the three realms: the underworld (roots), the living world (trunk), and the heavens (branches); the axis of the Celtic cosmos
- The Raven — perched in the branches, the raven is a bird of prophecy, transformation, and the otherworld; in Celtic lore it is the messenger of the gods and the companion of the Morrigan, goddess of fate
- The Serpent — coiled at the roots, the snake embodies rebirth and renewal through the shedding of skin, earth energy, and the hidden wisdom of the underworld; sacred in druidic tradition and associated with Cernunnos, lord of the wild
- Celtic Knotwork — no line has a beginning or an end; the eternal interlace represents the unbroken cycle of life, death, and rebirth
- Ancestry & Heritage — roots as ancestors, branches as descendants, trunk as the living present — the tree as family and lineage
Steeped in the knotwork tradition of our Celtic collection, this plaque carries the same depth of craft and symbolism found throughout our wooden wall plaque collection — a piece that speaks quietly but says everything.
