Hypnos in Greek Mythology

• Origin: Son of Nyx (Night) and twin brother of Thanatos (Death), dwelling in the underworld realm of Erebus
• Appearance: Depicted as a graceful young man with wings on his shoulders or temples, often holding a poppy flower or a horn of sleep
• Role: Personification of sleep — he brought rest and dreams to mortals and gods alike, even overpowering Zeus at Hera’s request
• Legends: In the Iliad, Hera enlisted Hypnos to lull Zeus to sleep so she could aid the Greeks; he was rewarded with the hand of one of the Graces
• Symbolism: Poppy flowers, wings, and the night sky — representing peace, renewal, and the boundary between waking and dreaming
