This hand-carved Hel statue brings the Norse goddess of the underworld to life in ecological ash wood — a striking altar piece that embodies the boundary between life and death. Carved with a varnish finish, it captures Hel's iconic dual form: one side living, one side skeletal, holding a dagger and a golden disc.
Each statue is individually hand-carved — no two are identical.

Hel in Norse Mythology
Ruler of Niflheim: Hel governs the realm of those who die from illness, old age, or natural causes — maintaining order in the afterlife.
Daughter of Loki: Born of the trickster god and the giantess Angrboda, she is sister to Fenrir and Jörmungandr.
Dual Nature: Her body is half living flesh, half skeletal — a visual symbol of her dominion over both life and death.
Role in Ragnarök: Prophecy names her a key figure in the foretold end of the world, alongside her siblings.
Protector of Souls: Despite her somber domain, Hel is not malevolent — she ensures fair treatment for all souls in her care.
