The Morrigan — Crow, Queen, Fate-Weaver

The Morrigan is a triple goddess — Badb, Macha, and Nemain, or in some traditions Anu — who appears at the edges of battle as a crow, a wolf, an eel, or a beautiful woman, depending on what she needs to be. She is not a goddess of violence for its own sake. She is a goddess of sovereignty: of the land, of the self, of the truth of what you are capable of. She tests warriors not to destroy them but to reveal them. Those who pass her tests earn her protection. Those who refuse her — as Cú Chulainn did — face the consequences of that refusal.

She is also a goddess of prophecy and fate. She appears on the battlefield to choose who will live and who will die, washing the armour of those fated to fall. In the Celtic tradition, she is one of the most complex and demanding deities — a goddess who asks for honesty, courage, and the willingness to face what is true about yourself, however uncomfortable that truth may be.
