The Myth of Tiamat

Tiamat is revered as the primordial goddess of the saltwater ocean in Sumero-Babylonian mythology, representing the chaotic waters from which all life—and even the gods—were born.

According to ancient texts, particularly the "Enuma Elish," Tiamat is often depicted as a mighty dragon or seven-headed hydra. She is described as the mother of all deities, later engaging in a legendary battle with the god Marduk.

Origins and Name Meaning:

  • The name Tiamat is believed to originate from the Akkadian word "tâmtu," meaning "sea," or possibly a combination of the Sumerian words "ti" (life) and "ama" (mother).
  • In the "Enuma Elish," it is written that before the heavens and earth existed, there was only the freshwater ocean Apsu and the saltwater ocean Tiamat, the mother of all creation.

Symbolism in Mesopotamian Culture:

In Mesopotamian belief, female deities were considered older and more powerful than their male counterparts. Tiamat was a central figure in the cult of water, which celebrated its creative and life-giving power.

Tiamat's Legendary Form:

Described as a colossal dragon, Tiamat is said to have possessed:

  • Crocodile jaws and lion's fangs
  • Webbed bat-like wings
  • Lizard feet and eagle claws
  • A snake-like body and cow horns

Across various cultures of the ancient world, myths about heroes battling primordial serpents abound, and Tiamat remains one of the earliest and most fascinating figures in these traditions.
