The image of the ship is associated with the symbolism of search, wandering, in particular, navigation (as a being that seeks to overcome its boundaries, to go beyond the present). It is also a symbol of refuge in stormy waters, like the island and Noah's ark, and an image of salvation.

Many ancient people had a belief that an underground river or sea barred the path to the afterlife and that the souls of the dead were transported there by ship or boat. This belief was especially clearly reflected in the funeral rite of the ancient Celts, Slavs, and Vikings, who buried their leaders and famous heroes on the decks of warships.

The comrades placed the fallen warrior in full combat gear into the funeral boat, pushed it away from the shore, and then showered it with lighted arrows to help the deceased quickly disappear from this world and get to the Kingdom of the Dead.
