What Is Samhain?
Samhain falls on the 31st of October and is the most sacred night of the pagan year — the feast of the dead, when the veil between the worlds of the living and the dead grows thin. It marks the beginning of the dark half of the year and the Celtic new year. Ancestors are honoured, the dead are welcomed, and the liminal deities who rule the threshold between life and death are called upon.

How to Set Up a Samhain Altar
A Samhain altar should feel dark, sacred, and deeply intentional. Use a black or deep purple cloth as your base. Place photographs or mementos of ancestors you wish to honour. Black and orange candles are traditional — black for the dark half of the year, orange for the harvest fire. Place your liminal deity statue at the centre as the focal point. Add offerings of apples, pomegranates, or a small cup of whiskey or wine for the ancestors. Dried herbs — mugwort, wormwood, or rosemary — honour the dead and thin the veil. Light your candles at dusk on the 31st of October.
