What Is Yule?
Yule marks the winter solstice — the longest night of the year, when darkness reaches its peak and the returning light is born anew. It is a time of stillness, ancestral memory, and the quiet promise of the sun's return. Fires are lit to welcome the light back, gifts are exchanged, and the gods of winter are honoured. Many of our modern Christmas traditions — the decorated tree, the gift-bringer, the feast — have their roots in the ancient Norse and Germanic celebration of Yule.

Odin is the undisputed ruler of Yule — the wandering Allfather who rides through the winter sky on his eight-legged horse Sleipnir, the original gift-bringer of the Norse world. His energy at Yule is one of wisdom, mystery, and the wild hunt that rides through the darkest nights. Frigg, queen of Asgard and goddess of the hearth and home, brings the warmth and protection of the domestic fire through the long dark season. Frau Holle, the Germanic winter goddess of snow and the domestic arts, is one of Yule's most ancient presences — she who shakes her feather bed to bring the snow. How to Set Up a Yule Altar
A Yule altar should feel warm, golden, and sacred against the darkness. Use a deep green, red, or gold cloth as your base. Place evergreen branches — pine, holly, or ivy — around your altar space as symbols of enduring life through the dark. Gold and white candles honour the returning sun. Place your winter deity statue at the centre as the focal point. Add pine cones, dried orange slices, cinnamon sticks, and offerings of mead, ale, or warm spiced wine. Light your candles at midnight on the solstice to welcome the returning light.
